Don’t miss the contra dance this Friday, January 18, 2013. We are very privileged to have one of our favorite bands—Cathy Barton and Dave Para—play for our dance, with guest callers from Cape Girardeau, John and Kathy Coffman. What better way to warm up on a cold winter evening.
A versatile duo, Dave and Cathy play several stringed instruments including hammered and fretted dulcimers, banjo, guitar, and Autoharp, as well as “found” instruments like bones, spoons, mouthbow, and leaf. Their concerts present a range of music from the lively dance tunes they have collected in their home region to old ballads to new songs.
Cathy Barton and Dave Para have made music together for over twenty-five years, during which they have celebrated the musical traditions and folklife of Missouri and the Ozarks in festivals, clubs, concert halls, schools, and studios across the United States and Europe. Their audiences are as diverse as their repertoire.
The dance will be at the usual time and place: 7 pm lessons, dance 7:30 to 10:30 pm at the First Christian Church, corner of 10th and Walnut in downtown Columbia, north entrance under the driveway canopy. The dances start easy and become somewhat more difficult (but not impossible) as the evening progresses, so if you’re a beginner, come early. All dances are taught and no partner is necessary. Please wear clean soft-soled shoes to protect our gorgeous wooden floor. And most importantly, have fun! Children 15 and under: free (as always); ages16-25 and students of any age with ID: $4; 26 and older: $7, a bargain!
Season passes will be for sale at this Friday’s dance (January 18) and can be purchased up through the February 15 dance. You can purchase a pass for all of our regular contra dances from February through June for $55.00 – 9 dances for the price of 8 (actually a savings of $8.00) if you purchase by February 1st. For students and youth the pass price will be $30.00, a savings of $6.00. Purchasing a pass lets you enjoy the benefit of pre-paying for the dances, you get one dance for free, and you help support Mid-Missouri Traditional Dancers.
