Workshop Descriptions

Our Saturday Spring Breakdown workshops have something for everyone, from beginning dancers and families, to experienced dancers!

COMMUNITY DANCES: Contra dances are generally thought of as being for adult dancers and teens. Although anyone is welcome to join in, some of the figures just aren’t suited for younger and older dancers. This workshop is intended to include all dancers of all ages and abilities. Instruction will be short, but thorough enough to get anyone started dancing in 5 minutes or less. Bring the family and we’ll all have fun. Recommended for ages 7 and up. With Jim Thaxter. Music by Amber Gaddy, David Cavins, and Bill Foley. Saturday, 10:30 am-noon.

INTERMEDIATE WALTZ: Focusing on rotary waltz and ways to spice it up, including pivots, free-spins, and hesitations. With Bob Green
Saturday, 10:30 am to noon, Capital Ritz Annex, next door to main venue

SQUARE YOUR SETS, NORTH, SOUTH, & WEST! An exploration of squares from the broad categories of New England, southern Appalachian, and early western dancing traditions, and contemporary compositions informed by those styles. With Chet Gray and music by Roger & The Nethertones, Saturday, 1:30-3:00 pm.

UNUSUAL FORMATIONS: This workshop will feature contra dances with unusual formations and movements.  Be ready for triple minors, tempests, cross contras, zias, three-face-three, grid squares, and grid contras! With Chet Gray and music by Roger & The Nethertones, Saturday, 3:15-4:45 pm.

Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
